Anti-racism activists protest white supremacy at Calgary City Hall to mark March 21, 2009 - the International Day for the Elimination of Racism
A group of dedicated anti-racist activists held a celebration of diversity on the steps of city hall in Calgary Saturday morning to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racism. The celebration was part of a city-wide effort to create a peaceful demonstration to overshadow the message of a white supremacist group reportedly planning a separate event later the same day.
The celebration of diversity was covered by the Calgary Herald as was the later violent demonstration by the Aryan Guard.
Members of the Aryan Guard have a long history of violence and there demonstration against March 21, 2009 was no different.
News articles in the Calgary Herald failed to provide a critical account of the goals and membership of the Aryan Guard. It is to be noted that the Calgary Herald is considered to be extremely right wing based on their biased reporting of racist groups combined with articles critical of both the Alberta Human Rights Council and human rights lawyer and activist, Richard Warman.
